Established in 2001, the .NAME top-level domain name extension is the only one intended for personal websites only. These domain names can consist of personal or fictitious names, nicknames and/or other designations people are popular by. At first, only 3rd-level registrations were allowed, so if you wanted to buy john.doe.name, you would have to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Already acquired third-level names remained functional.
